Dr. Johnson is the author of three books, each of them unique in its own way.
- Biomechanics and Exercise Physiology, originally published in 1991 and now in its second edition (2007), offers an unusual combination of basics of exercise physiology with equations and models that the bioengineer can use to quantitatively predict exercise response.
- Biological Process Engineering (1999) gives a systems approach to transport processes in biological systems. Its worked examples and tables of values make it a valuable reference book as well as a textbook.
- Biology for Engineers, Dr. Johnson's newest textbook, was published in 2011. Dr. Johnson welcomes comments and feedback.
- Design of Biomedical Devices and Systems, Third Edition (2015), provides a real-world approach to the design of biomedical engineering devices and/or systems.
- Read*Ink, A Collection of Writings for Medical and Biological Engineers
